A deep guide to Kyoto, focusing on Sakyo Ward, by an author who is a Tokyoite through and through but occasionally lives in Kyoto. She bikes to coffee shops and public bathhouses near Kyoto University that Kyoto natives have recommended, and enjoys the local architecture during walks. This book presents a look at Kyoto through which both its attractiveness as a modern city and the depth of its history emerge in multiple layers.

“As a result of his basic stance of knowing the city and its people, Mori’s gaze reveals a new side of Kyoto that is different from the general image so far.” ― Kyoto Shimbun

Afterword: Kyoto’s “Rive Gauche”

Introduction
Having reached my sixties, I’ve again started traveling to Kyoto.
While I’ve traveled there for work, I’ve always just taken care of business, then returned home. The hotels and restaurants are expensive, the famous historical sites are all crowded… Besides, I’ve made the rounds at least once, in days when the crowds were smaller and the charm greater. Add to that the fact that there was something about Kyoto, some poorly defined something about the city I just didn’t like. After developing a major illness, however, I decided to give “tree qigong” a try.
